Five footballers, who were accused of match-fixing, have been charged with treason.
The government filed a case on Sunday in the Special Court against them, seeking a life sentence as punishment.
The five players include national team captain Sagar Thapa, Sandeep Rai, Ritesh Thapa, Anjan KC and Bikash Singh Chhetri. They were arrested in October over allegations of being involved in match-fixing in several international matches including the 2011 World Cup qualifiers. According to the police, the players received money from individuals they suspect to be match-fixers.
The players have denied any wrongdoing.

  1. Namah onSays:treason? LOL…fraud yes, but I think if we start down the treason and traitor path, there are so many more…first almost all the politicians…
  2. Hurray onSays:First charge most of the current politicians including the ones from Madeshi Morcha for treason. They have looted more money from state coffers with their bloodied hand than these amateur footballers can every dream of.
Why go after small and helpless? Take care of the root cause.
