Leaders intensify informal consultations to resolve crisis
KATHMANDU, Nov 18: Top leaders of the major three parties have intensified informal political dialogues and consultations in a bid to resolve present crisis and address the Madhes agitation.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Monday discussed the situation after the high-level talks with the United Democratic Madhesi Front and PM’s address to the nation on Sunday. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Oli and Dahal separately discussed the political issues with Nepali Congress Acting President Ram Chandra Paudel on Monday.
“PM has held political consultations with UCPN (Maoist) Chairman, who is also the coordinator of the High Level Political Committee, as well as the leaders of the main opposition Nepali Congress on the issues of Madhes and the formation of Reconstruction Authority,” said Pramod Dahal, the prime minister’s press advisor.
Nepali Congress leader Paudel said that he discussed the present crisis with both PM and Dahal but they were unable to find a way out. “The talks were related to the progress made on talks with Madhes-based parties, and the border blockade. I had also asked them for their views on the possibility of revising provincial delineation to address the demands of the Madhes-based parties,” said Paudel.
“Political consultations have intensified but we are yet to find a definite way out,” he added.

Meanwhile, UCPN (Maoist) has also discussed the ongoing agitation on Madhes and constitution amendment with civil society members from Madhes.

“We have intensified consultations with the leaders of the CPN-UML, Nepali Congress, Madhes-based parties as well as civil society members from Madhes. We have started serious discussions to seek political consensus for resolving the crisis in a package,” said Narayankaji Shrestha, the vice-chairman of the UCPN (Maoist).

“We are in no mood to let the crisis to prolong. We all have a common understanding that the issue of provincial delineation should be addressed but it would be too early to disclose the details of our talks. Probably, the talks will lead us toward amending the constitution,” said Shrestha.

Following a political dialogue between the major three parties, parties in the ruling coalition and agitating Madhes-based parties on Sunday, the leaders have intensified consultations.

“UCPN (Maoist) chairman informed us about his discussions with the prime minister and Nepali Congress leaders. He basically asked us about a way out for amending the constitution to meet the demands of Madhes,” said Advocate Deependra Jha, who was present during Dahal’s meeting with Madhesi civil society.
